The LORD is king; let the peoples tremble!
He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!

Psalm 99:1

Yesterday's psalm                         Permalink for today's Daily Psalm                  Tomorrow's psalm

Psalm 99

1      The LORD is king; let the peoples tremble!
    He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!
2   The LORD is great in Zion;
    he is exalted over all the peoples.
3   Let them praise your great and awesome name.
    Holy is he!
4   Mighty King, lover of justice,
    you have established equity;
  you have executed justice
    and righteousness in Jacob.
5   Extol the LORD our God;
    worship at his footstool.
    Holy is he!
6      Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
    Samuel also was among those who called on his name.
    They cried to the LORD, and he answered them.
7   He spoke to them in the pillar of cloud;
    they kept his decrees,
    and the statutes that he gave them.
8      O LORD our God, you answered them;
    you were a forgiving God to them,
    but an avenger of their wrongdoings.
9   Extol the LORD our God,
    and worship at his holy mountain;
    for the LORD our God is holy.

Daily Prayer (based on Psalm 99:1)

O Lord, how easily we take You for granted! How readily we turn You into some little pal, a god who is there to meet our needs and that's it. We forget Your awesomeness, Your majesty, Your holiness, Your power. Forgive us, Lord, when we trivialize You, when we minimize Your grandeur.

Indeed, You are King, and not just any king, but King of kings and Lord of lords. You are the Sovereign above all sovereigns, the One who holds all power and authority in Your hands. If we could somehow see You, we would indeed tremble. We'd quake in our boots, right alongside the earth itself.

Then, and only then, would we perceive the wonder of Your grace and love. Then, and only then, would we be amazed by the fact that You want fellowship with us. Then, and only then, would we realize how incredible it is that we can approach You, not with mortal fear, but with boldness and confidence.

Postscript

Hebrews 4:14-16

Since, then, we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast to our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
