But surely, God is my helper.

Psalm 54:4a

Yesterday's psalm                         Permalink for today's Daily Psalm                  Tomorrow's psalm

Psalm 54

0  To the leader: with stringed instruments. A Maskil of David, when the Ziphites went and told Saul, “David is in hiding among us.”
1  Save me, O God, by your name,
  and vindicate me by your might.
2  Hear my prayer, O God;
  give ear to the words of my mouth.
3  For the insolent have risen against me,
  the ruthless seek my life;
  they do not set God before them. Selah
4  But surely, God is my helper;
  the Lord is the upholder of my life.
5  He will repay my enemies for their evil.
  In your faithfulness, put an end to them.
6  With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to you;
  I will give thanks to your name, O LORD, for it is good.
7  For he has delivered me from every trouble,
  and my eye has looked in triumph on my enemies.

Daily Prayer (based on Psalm 54:4a)

O Lord, You are indeed my Helper!

Thank You for helping me to believe in You.

Thank You for helping me to desire You, to want to spend time with You each day.

Thank You for helping me to understand, preach, and teach Your Word.

Thank You for helping me to be a better husband and father.

Thank You for helping me in countless ways I don't even recognize. I'm sure I don't even know one-tenth of the ways You help me. Yet even what I know fills me with gratitude and praise. You are such a good God!

Postscript

The Hebrew word translated as "helper" in verse 4 is, literally, a participle that means "one who is helping." In English we often think of a helper as a subordinate as in "mom's little helper." But help can also come from one who is bigger and stronger, as when a mother helps a child learn to walk. God's help obviously falls into this category. He is our helper in that, when we are weak, He is strong and available to us.
