"Be still, and know that I am God!"

Psalm 46:10a

Yesterday's psalm                         Permalink for today's Daily Psalm                  Tomorrow's psalm

Psalm 46

0To the leader. Of the Korahites. According to Alamoth. A Song.
1  God is our refuge and strength,
  a very present help in trouble.
2  Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
  though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
3  though its waters roar and foam,
  though the mountains tremble with its tumult. Selah
4  There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,
  the holy habitation of the Most High.
5  God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;
  God will help it when the morning dawns.
6  The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter;
  he utters his voice, the earth melts.
7  The LORD of hosts is with us;
  the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah
8  Come, behold the works of the LORD;
  see what desolations he has brought on the earth.
9  He makes wars cease to the end of the earth;
  he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear;
  he burns the shields with fire.
10  “Be still, and know that I am God!
  I am exalted among the nations,
  I am exalted in the earth.”
11  The LORD of hosts is with us;
  the God of Jacob is our refuge. Selah

Daily Prayer (based on Psalm 46:10a)

You are God,
and I am not,
and my family is not,
and my church is not,
and my country is not,
and financial security is not,
and common sense is not,
and being liked is not,
and success is not,
and comfort is not,
and wealth is not.
And peace of mind is not.

You alone are God.
You alone are exalted above all other things.
Nothing compares with
Your majesty,
Your beauty,
Your power,
Your excellence,
Your wisdom,
Your glory.

You are God.
You are my God.
Before You I am humbled;
I am comforted;
I am astounded;
I am grateful;
I am still;
I am silent . . . .

Postscript

"Be still, and know that I am God!" This verse needs to be emblazoned on my heart. Like so many people in our day, I fill my life with anything but stillness before God. I am so busy, so harried, so noisy. Even my devotional moments can seem rushed and scattered. My soul yearns for the quiet that comes in stillness before God, as I lean back into His arms and know that I am secure. In my book, No Holds Barred, chapter 3 is called "The Quiet After the Storm." It's an encouragement to be still before the Lord. Though I wrote this chapter, and though I still believe everything I wrote, I have a hard time doing it.
