Psalm 29

A Psalm of David.
1  Ascribe to the LORD, O heavenly beings,
  ascribe to the LORD glory and strength.
2  Ascribe to the LORD the glory of his name;
  worship the LORD in holy splendor.
3  The voice of the LORD is over the waters;
  the God of glory thunders,
  the LORD, over mighty waters.
4  The voice of the LORD is powerful;
  the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
5  The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars;
  the LORD breaks the cedars of Lebanon.
6  He makes Lebanon skip like a calf,
  and Sirion like a young wild ox.
7  The voice of the LORD flashes forth flames of fire.
8  The voice of the LORD shakes the wilderness;
  the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh.
9  The voice of the LORD causes the oaks to whirl,
  and strips the forest bare;
  and in his temple all say, “Glory!”
10  The LORD sits enthroned over the flood;
  the LORD sits enthroned as king forever.
11  May the LORD give strength to his people!
  May the LORD bless his people with peace!

Daily Prayer (based on Psalm 29:2)

You are holy, Mighty King, beyond comprehension. You are brilliant beyond the brightest star. You are purer than the gleam of a perfect diamond. You are more radiant than the hottest fire. You are more stunning than the most colorful sunset. Though this world reflects Your glory, You are so much more, so much better, so much more awesome. Before You, what can I do but fall on my knees in humble submission? What can I do but offer my praise, my wonder, my life? All praise be to You, glorious God, mighty God, holy God!

Postscript

Psalm 29:2 highlights two of the core acts of worship. When we worship, we "ascribe" (literally "give" in Hebrew) glory to God. We proclaim with our words what is true of God, thus honoring Him in our proclamation. We also "worship the LORD in holy splendor." The Hebrew verb for "worship" means, literally, to bow down before a sovereign in humble submission. Thus we come before God both to offer our words of praise and to offer ourselves as His humble, willing servants.
